The Cause Not The Cure
The cure, you can help us find it, donate today and be apart of change! Does this sound familiar? Does it appeal to your need to help humanity? Phrases like these play with many Americans heart strings and make them feel compelled to donate. When the donating effects a large group, like breast cancer does women, profits from donating increase dramatically. Many people have at least one woman in their life that they care for and would not want to be effected by breast cancer. While donating to find a cure is admirable, many do not realize how futile this good-willed action may be. Today, consumers are consistently taken advantage of by marketing statements. In the breast cancer awareness campaign consumers are told get a mammogram because it saves lives, and to donate for the cure. But, do mammograms really save lives and shouldn’t awareness of the cause be the real focus? After all if you eliminate the cause there is no need for a cure.
In our fast paced society, spending money is the easiest way for us to help. Whether its donating or buying products that are supposed to support "finding the cure" for breast cancer. Many people do not think to verify what there donations are used for and even fewer actually look at the products they buy to see what's really in them. Many of the products today sold with the pink ribbon in support of breast cancer have ingredients linked to causing cancer according to various sources? For example products like, Biore deep cleansing nose strips contain laramide oxide a chemical linked to causing cancer, Ban Total Refresh Cooling Body Cloths Restore contains polysorbate another ingredient said to cause cancer and John Frieda Frizz-Ease Smooth Start Repairing Shampoo contains two different parabens (propylparaben and methylparaben) as well as Laureth-4, and Laureth-23, all linked to causing cancer.
Now these ingredients are only mentioned because they cause cancer if extensive research on the ingredients list in these products were done cancer would not be the only thing these products can cause. Ironically, people are buying products to fight cancer and increasing thier chances of developing cancer with those very same products. You might be wondering why these companies would sell these cancer causing products to us? But the answer is simple, because these ingredients make production cheaper or the product more appealing. You might also question why is this not regulated? According to the fda.gov "Under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, cosmetic products and ingredients do not require FDA approval before they go on the market. The exception is color additives (other than those used in most hair dyes)." The FDA may test products after they have been distributed, but by then its to late it has already been sold to the general public. This approach by the FDA is retroactive and irresponsible considering according to fda.gov the "FDA is responsible for protecting the public health by assuring the safety, efficacy and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation."
Speaking of radiation, the next flaw in the breast cancer awareness campaign is the push for annual mammograms. While early detection is said to be the key to fighting cancer many studies show that is not the case. According to Mercola.com "Several studies over the past few years have concluded that mammograms do not save lives, and may actually harm more women than they help, courtesy of false positives, overtreatment, and radiation-induced cancers." We are taught that radiation, in general, no matter the source leads to cancer, so why do we detect and treat cancer with something that has proven to be carcinogenic. Where's the logic? For big business it makes complete sense, because mammograms equal money and for cancer treatments the profits continuously grow. Healthy or dead people do not make companies any money, but people with chronic illnesses such as cancer are the real money-makers. While cancer treatments seem to fix the problem, many cancer treatments actually extend the illness. Sure cancers can be cut out or treated with radiation but if the cause has not been eliminated the cancer will come back and radiation will only help the return of said cancer.
Finding the cause can be the cure, but shedding light on the cause would be detrimental to majority of companies in the US, because sadly there are few that do not use cheap carcinogenic ingredients. In our over-processed world the beverages, foods, cosmetics, cleaning products, homes, cars, beds, fabrics, and furniture we use all have a negative potential on our health, not limited to being carcinogenic. Removal of these harmful chemicals would be the ideal solution, but in our immorally capitalistic society that is a highly unlikely occurrence. While raising awareness is good for all cancers many companies conveniently overlook the fact that the cause is just as important and would lead to the cure. Sadly there is less money in finding the cause and many consequences for big businesses, so it makes sense that they would not be concerned with promoting the cause. In the healthcare industry there are few who do not intend to profit off of your struggles. Become informed by analyzing all information presented and following up by researching. Take your health into your own hands, because only you profit from you being healthy.
